
What Is the Working Principle of an Ignition Coil?
The ignition coil operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It receives signals from the ECU (Engine Control Unit), which controls the switching of the primary circuit of the ignition coil through electronic control.
When current flows through the primary winding, a magnetic field is generated inside the iron core, storing magnetic energy. When the primary current is suddenly interrupted (usually by a power transistor disconnecting the ground circuit), the magnetic field rapidly collapses. This collapse releases stored energy and induces a high voltage in the secondary winding.
This induced high voltage is sufficient to cause the spark plug to discharge and ignite the air-fuel mixture. This process is known as inductive discharge ignition.
Core Function of Auto Ignition Coil
The primary role of an ignition coil is to convert the vehicle’s low-voltage battery power (typically 12V) into high-voltage electricity (approximately 15,000V to 30,000V) required to ignite the engine’s air-fuel mixture.
